Dancing on a Sunday

You all go to shows, concerts, clubs, etc.  None of them exist without Dancers.  How many Stars introduce them by name?  How many audience members care?  BUT, can you picture the stage or the show without them?  Have you ever thought about how hard they work but little $ they make compare to others on the same stage?
Do you know that, even without injury, their careers rarely last past 30?  I can hardly think of a handful that ever got rich or famous; Astaire, Gene Kelly, Baryshnykov.  Can you add more names.  Let's compare that to famous singers.
I'm not blogging this to make you feel guilty or sorry for dancers.  Dancers Love what they do and chose their career for Passion.  They wouldn't do anything else, despite the price they pay for it.
Im writing this because I want you to notice these great people and to watch carefully and to pick out the next great one on stage.
I had that experience last week.  A stage full of good dancers but one moved in a special way. anyone would have noticed.  I was in the presence of rare talent. But she was one of the group, no special place or solo part.  Mark my words, it's coming for her.  She is that good. Where was this?  At a charity Benefit. She was dancing her heart out for free to help others.  She was so happy doing it.  She had no idea how happy she was making us.

I am a great fan, and sometimes investor, of Broadway Theater, whether it be a Musical, Drama, Comedy or any alternative form.  We go at least once a week and see almost everything that is playing.  We used to invest in many shows but have narrowed our selections to try harder to turn a profit. It is harder than we thought at the start.
We also have always gone to many Charity Benefits.  A lot of these support Theater charities such as Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids and the Actors Fund.  Lately, many have drawn us into the Dance World.  We have gone to Benefits supporting the NYC Ballet, American Ballet Theater, Dancers Respond to Aids, Career Transition to Aids.  I tell you about these experiences because the Dance World allows you to experience a diversity of types of dance that most of us can't even imagine.  It's not all Swan Lake and the Nutcracker.  Although they are beautiful.
One of the thrills, in attending the Benefits, that support the Dance Companies, is the opportunity to meet the wonderful dancers.  You learn just how bright, charming and lovely they are as people.  I urge you to try if it if you haven't already.  If Benefits are not something that you are ready for, just buy a ticket to a performance.  There are many Dance companies all over the city: Paul Taylor, Joyce, Cedar Lake, Alvin Ailey.  Special performances at Lincoln Center and City Center.  Give it a shot, instead of a movie, as something different for a night out on a date.
I'm grateful to those who have read my words, and especially to those who have identified themselves and attached photos.  I would like it if you send comments and we could have a dialogue on topics that interst you.
Here's my latest under the topic of ANNOYANCES.  I receive a letter from ATT telling me to take my 2G cell phone to one of their company owned stores for  a free upgrade, due to their upgrading to signals that 2G can't handle.  I am entitld to a new 3G phone at no cost and with no contract.  There are 12 ATT stores within 2 miles of my house, but only 2 are company owned.  The others can do the same the service but require a new 2 Year contract.  Of course, I go to a company owned store.  After an hour, I leave. Why?  No extra sales personnel to handle the rush that the company knew was coming, all the replacement phones were gone by 10:30AM.  The estimated waiting time was 3 hours. Thank you ATT for the FREE upgrade!!

For those of you that are financially oriented, look up the ATT Balance Sheet and see how many $Billions they value GOODWILL at.  A lesson for those who plan to go into their own business.  Be careful that as you grow you don't lose sight of the details.   It happened to Apple and they had to bring Steve Jobs back. It happened at Starbucks and the founder had to come back to save the company.

Never mistreat your employees or forget that they are your connection to the customer, even if they work out of sight or in a factory.  Keep the employee fairly and keep them happy.  It will always pay dividends in quality and customer satisfaction.

This is a 3 day weekend for many, but, for those in retail, it is one of their busiest days.  For those who work at resorts, they are also overloaded.   This is always true in the business world.  When choosing a career path, consider this minor fact.  Some area of business has the opposite schedule.  Just think of crowded hotels when you go away and the people who work there.   Most of us rest on Sundays, But, the stores are open and so are many restaurants.  What are you doing today???

Do friends sometimes disappoint you?  How?  Small ways? Important ways?  Ways that hurt?
Do they cancel dates? Not have time to listen? Only want you to listen? Not return calls?
Perhaps they make up for it in other ways?  With kindnesses?  With being fun when you are together?  Is it enough?  Over time, which sticks more in your memory, the hurts or the laughs?  Has this person really deserved to be called friend?

Many readers are searching for jobs.  The internet is filled with advice on how to secure one.  there are thousands of sites to teach you how to write a resume and cover letter.  Some are actually good. Most are not.  The problem is that they assume you have a long enough history to fill an interesting resume.  What about those that have had one job or are just out of school or have worked several jobs for short periods?
You must tell the truth, of course.  This is easy in a letter, or interview, but many companies insist on submissions online only and won't take cover letters.
The second problem is that they all go through Human Resources, not to the dept. head who needs the spot filled.  I will address this in my next post.

A lesson we should all learn.  Ask for what you want, whether it be a job, raise, change in position, rent reduction, anything in life.  Rarely will it come it to you otherwise.  Don't be afraid.  Usually, the person you are asking thinks more highly of you than you do of yourself.  Just pose the request the right way.  Time and time again this has proven to have positive outcomes.  it certainly is better than griping about your plight in life.
Never quit a job to look for a job.  Your chances are always better when you are working. The potential employer has more interest in someone employed.  When you are unemployed, no matter what you say, he may think you were fired.  He can't think that if you are in a job.
A THOUGHT FOR INVESTORS: APPLE APPLE APPLE.  Think of it as a separate category apart from your other holdings.  As high as it is, it is still cheap because of the new products coming and the possibilty of a dividend.  This blogger says BUY.

some quick advice

Just a quickee for all of you that are working in restaurants. No matter which on it is, you are working hard long hours and beating up your bodies and stressing your minds to make ends meet.  Maybe you know this and maybe not.
Many NY restaurants today are owned by groups, sometimes you have to search to find the Corporate names.  For instance, BRGUEST is Steve Hansen, Atlamtic Grill, Blue Fin, Ruby Foo and more. Fourth Wall Restaurants is Alan Stillman, Smith and Wollensky, Hurricane Club, Ben Benson, etc. China Grill Management is Jeffrey Chodorow , many differient names.
I write about this because many of these groups offer something independent restaurants don't
HEALTH BENEFITS.  Same thing with restaurants in hotels.
You're working hard anyway, why not try to work somewhere that offers this vital Benefit.
Hope this helps.
